Experts in the field, Passion for the outdoors

Our entire purpose is getting people outdoors to learn, and every single interaction we have with a participant, client, vendor, or random person on the street is guided by advancing experiential education. We aren’t desk jockeys who are peddling over priced field training and guided trips, we’re innate lovers of the outdoors who have thrown a leg over the corporate horse to show others the benefits of learning outdoors.

We have a foundation in dealing with Fortune 500 companies, Energy Industry Majors, Individuals, and everything inbetwixt. No other company can boast our expertise at managing risk in the outdoors and leading effective trips that results in personal growth, concept retention, and a good experience.

We lead professional training trips for geologists because we’re the best at it.

We guide adventures for individuals because we love it.

Absolute Trust

The Geology Field School is founded on wilderness risk management, experiential education, precise logistical operation, and the transitive health benefits of the outdoors. Though we’re keenly aware of industry needs, practices, trends, technical topics, and standards, we’re not run by geologists. We don’t want to buy up course material. We don’t want to digitize the field and package it on a web server for mass production. We’re a small company that takes pride in privacy.

Our instructors own the rights to all of their own material and we, as most other providers, are a conduit to provide you with their course. We’re one of many providers in a fairly crowded field but no one does it better than us.

We happen to think our flavor of training is the best because we’re the only outfit with a field risk management professional. Everyone else only has vague words like “highly trained” and “highest possible safety standards.” We are built on wilderness risk management from the ground up.

We don’t have shareholders to appease, and we don’t have instructor-investors that are driving an agenda to teach their own courses, and we’re not an attempt to get the old band back together from the long gone glory days of geoscience training.

Our focus is on innovation, changing our esoteric training industry, and offering only the best technical courses that we can reasonably mitigate. No exceptions, accommodations, or compromises.

The Standard in Safety

Anyone can plan a field trip, tell everyone to strap a helmet on, and deem their group “safe” after touting their mysterious HSE standards. Our professional background is in precise and appropriate mitigation for the specific field environment in which we have been working for decades. Our gear is researched and purposeful, our staff training is specific and arduous. Are medical training standards are clinical level. We originally made the standard for other providers in the training arena and are continuing to push the field even further. From AEDs to Satellite tracking to medical training standards, we don’t meet the bar, we set it and everyone else tries to keep up.

No other training providers offer career experts in wilderness risk management. We staff the best field leaders we can find rather than “training up” geologists or other office staff members to the field leadership role to reduce our overhead. Our team has encyclopedic regional expertise in the geographic areas we lead courses (America, USA). Social hazards, flora, fauna, climate, and weather patterns are subjects that we pride ourselves on while other companies see it sufficient to send a field leader from across the globe who may have never been to the field location.

To be frank, sometimes geology field trips aren’t ready to be on the big stage where they have to meet industry standards. Our mission and passion is raising the standard of these courses to a better practicable standard of risk management, but we don’t do that on your time. We run only the courses that we know meet the highest level of our standards, even if it means saying “No.”

Least cost, most value

Training is too expensive. We have a fixed price per day that we charge and it’s the lowest of all training providers . This model incentivizes us to reduce waste and superfluous spending in the field rather than just “billing it back” to the company. We also have a lower overhead thanks to modern business practices, leveraging technology to collaborate internally, and not recycling 20 year old ideas and practices from the early years.

We look at our program in terms of quality and value, not growth margins and profit. The margin built in to our rate is a modest one by industry standards, enough to keep us in business and not so much that we’re unabashedly gouging clients. We’re happy to talk about this transparently and we’re proud of our position to oppose the ostentatiously opulent activities that some instructors have embraced from living the billable lifestyle for too long.

Yet still we’re able to run comfortable trip in far from austere conditions. We strike an ideal balance so that the purpose of the trip, field based geology education, is maximized while still allowing exceptional group interaction and above average amenities all the way around… Just no champagne boat tours, decanted steak house wine, or century-old brandy. We think that’s reasonable.
